The Arizona Jam Basketball League Season
Jam Basketball league play consists of three separate seasons.
- Fall; October though December, (6 regular season games with a single-elimination post season tournament)
- Winter; January through March (6 regular season games with a single-elimination post season tournament)
- Spring; April through June. (4 regular season games with a single-elimination post season tournament)
- Summer: June ( 4 weeks of 2 hour skills and games sessions)
Jam has a separate boys and girls league, although girls may play in the boys division.
The players are divided by age groups and boys-girls as follows:
- Kindergarten and below (coed), teams determined by neighborhoods
- 1st graders (coed), teams determined by neighborhoods
- 2nd graders (coed), teams determined by neighborhoods
- 3rd graders (boys), Teams determined by draft
- 3rd-4th graders (girls) Teams determined by draft
- 4th grade (boys) Teams determined by draft
- 5th-6th grade (girls) Teams determined by draft
- 5th-6th grade (boys) Teams determined by draft
- 7th-8th grade (girls) Teams determined by draft
- 7th-8th grade (boys) Teams determined by draft
Depending on the demographics of the enrollment, Jam may change the age groups. For instance, if we have enough girls for a 2nd-3rd grade combination, and enough for a separate 4th and 5th grade division, we may elect to split the grades in that manner. Same with the older boys divisions. We will attempt to have all divisions by individual grades, both boys and girls divisions, when possible.
Teams in 2nd grade and below are formed by neighborhoods. We try to honor special requests in these age groups. Teams, in 3rd grade and above, are formed by a player evaluation and draft. Special requests are not permitted although a coach and his assistant will always be allowed to have their child (each team is allowed two named players which are for the coach and his assistant) . The main goal of the draft is team balance.
Games are played on Fridays evenings and Saturday (all day) at schools in the Kyrene School District. Games are allotted one hour of time.
Some times there may be a game or 2 on Sunday. Practice times and locations are determined by coaches and parents. Usually 1-2 practices a week are the norm.
